Storia e contesto architettonico
Il Torrione fu edificato tra il 1490 e 1492 da Marco di Nicola di Baldino nell’ambito del rinnovamento delle fortificazioni comunali sotto il dominio aragonese. Faceva parte di un sistema difensivo composto da quattro torrioni rotondi (Sant'Angelo, dell'Abisso, San Martino e della Porta), integrati nella nuova cinta muraria, più spessa e bassa, concepita per resistere all'artiglieria da fuoco. I torrioni di San Martino e della Porta di Zappino furono successivamente demoliti, il primo è ormai interrato, il secondo è scomparso in favore dell'espansione monastica del 1854. Nella seconda metà del XVI secolo, a causa delle crescenti minacce turche e del passaggio sotto dominio spagnolo, la cinta muraria fu rafforzata con cinque baluardi pentagonali, l’incavo di profondi fossati e l’ampliamento di una vasta zona senza ostacoli (il cosiddetto guasto), per agevolare l’avvistamento di eventuali nemici.
Caratteristiche architettoniche
Il Torrione Sant' Angelo è l'unico tra i quattro originari ad aver conservato pressoché integra sia la struttura interna sia quella esterna, diventando un raro esempio di fortezza tardo-medievale ben conservata. Questo rende l’edificio un prezioso documento architettonico del periodo aragonese e delle tecniche di difesa dell’epoca.
